Oh, hello. Here is another rip from my fine friend from across that big old body of water--an old rip at that. A sideproject of the frontman (as if there was much of a backing) of the monumental synth-spazz project Vitor Hublot. Somewhat a departure here, maybe more. Here is essentially, at the time, the previous 20 or so years in recorded music history given the John Oswald treatment. Er, if Oswald hadn't already done that at the same time frame. Maybe a bit more obscure in choice here, though I do recognize many a phrase here, and I have a terrible memory! Particularly the first the track-from the getgo I can recognize that song, see if you can. I can't even remember which song it was.

A familiar cast of characters. I wonder if this was an artistic choice or one borne out of the need to credit the musicians themselves. I'll go with both.

tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE - Mechanically Repetitive / ReRecorded Records Record

tENT is back at it with the sonic equivalent of 'pataphysics known as "Usic". This complex and abrasive form of sound art utilizes objects, found sound, collages, voice(s) and sneezes. This record covers a swath of years in the dude's career, including a remix of sorts of the Usic - √-1 = A Plethora Of No Longer Neglected Audio/Conceptual Obstacle Courses record (or "obstacle course", as he describes the process) I posted all those days and minutes and hours back.

The concept here is less grandiose, so to speak. Though, this piece of plastic is still an art object. The first side is relatively normal (physically, at least), but the B-side is something else entirely. It appears to have been cut twice, once in the center hole and another time in the slightly off-center so described in the giant booklet which accompanied this thing. I don't have a backup turntable with a needle in its possession and I'd rather not test this on my main unit as I would like to ride that horse 'til it fails. I'll record the second side and post some scans when I come to that burning bridge.

Various Artists - A Consonant Vowel

As the year changes, I don't. Another sound art compilation for your ears and, perhaps the intention of the organizers, brain. Like the last post, collage and industrious noise play a prominent role here. This time, it's centered around Ohio-born sound artistry. Seeing as it was released by the "Cincinnati Artist's Group Effort", it makes sense. Ohioans such as John M. Bennett and Charlotte Pressler make an appearance, as well as Cincy groups like Lopez Sophisticates and Contraption #37. Even a Cleveland projects contribute with the Backyard Mechanics for Language (led by Luigi-Bob Drake, who appeared on Put Down Your Pencil). Other than that, artists from different areas also submit their efforts here. These include the late, great Minóy of California and the ephemeral Wisconsin project Qwa Digs Never Parish. I wonder if Charlotte Schmitz is related to K.D. Schmitz. As an aside, making scans for 12'' LP's on a small scanner is a lot harder than it seems. Happy New Year.

Various Artists - Put Down Your Pencil

Lotso familiar names on this tape. A sound art comp featuring the likes of the BCO, Larry Wendt, Croiners, Al Margolis, and Illusion of Safety. A lot to like here, from the industrial rumblings of Big Red Stain to the silly Plunderphonia of the Tape-Beatles and Ed Special. Wendt's track here in particular is very interesting, an arresting spoken piece describing the lucrative venture of toad farming in San Jose (if anyone has any of his old tapes from Frog Peak/Hollow, let me know). All in all, an interesting experimental collection.
