I am still alive and I have seen the comments. Somehow I missed some Google security update wrt Google Drive download links, even had a deadline. Hopefully I can fix this without much trouble, but perhaps this early Christmas present can tide you over. Before yuletide sets in, that is.

This is one CD I've had my eyes on for awhile, never really finding the right Discogs seller or Japanese auction to snipe. Until now, that is. I've laid clear my huge interest in Toypop scene in the past, both through posts on this very blog and lists on another. This CD is a good showcase of the variety of sounds produced in this cross-continent yet seemingly tiny movement, and it makes for a good collected companion to the sort of "thrown-against-the-wall" nature of my playlist. 

As for now, "musique du jouet" still languishes in a sort of obscurity that I hope changes in the future. If only a little bit of exposure, it's a beautiful and rich assortment of sounds for anyone willing to lend an ear. At this point I oughtta write a book on it.

Scavenger Quartet - Whistling For Leftovers

Some soundtracks for imaginary films. This rotating cast of a quartet is headed by the great Frank Pahl who uses his typical exploits (toys and whistling, mostly) to create wild if not incongruent compositions, though the latter could be attributed to this being something of a collection of commissions than a proper album.

An instrumental Only A Mother in some ways, their following album is much more focused. Maybe it will hit these almost dead hallways sometime soon? Breathe a little life into it.

Gary Panter - Pray For Smurph

Here's something I didn't know existed 'til a few months ago. The CD issue of this, that is. I had once heard an old vinyl rip of this album, weirdowave avant-country by the comic artist Panter. An apocryphal Ralph Records curiosity if you will.

Now a local comic book store came upon a batch of these, cutting the price down by magnitudes going by Discogs. It was really serendipitous, I opened a social media app one night (turning morning) and came upon it and gave it an order. The rest is history. 

Now given that this is by an artist of Panter's cache you would expect to find some sweet prints in the booklet. If you have been paying attention to the scans, you would know yourself to be correct. It also came with this sick flag, which I have hanging proudly in my closet at the minute.

This is a definitive "zolo" release, although I see that more as a pure aesthetic than an actual musical genre. If you haven't heard it before and my aforementioned description of the music doesn't register, think of it like the music he designed covers for in the past: Snakefinger, Residents (and Renaldo/the Loaf), Oingo Boingo, the good doctor Eugene Chadbourne, etc.... The herk and the jerk of a twang in a mode of new wave.

Before I start, let me recommend this live performance being offered on Bandcamp by the great itoken. With that giving me a good conscious to share this to you for free, here is a set of tracks recorded in the late 90s by one of my favorite toy/avant/prog groups, a mix of live and studio tracks. 

A zip of this has been floating about the internet for a long while, but only in measly 192 kbps mp3. Today I give to you, in fresh 4K quality, a 96 kbps opus rip!!!!

Claus van Bebber - Akustische Werksübersicht 1977-1995

Here's something in the cards I've kept to my chest for awhile. Once again, I had been graciously provided a rip of a long awaited object by a certain online friend. Like a needle reaching the run-out groove, the time since this exchange has allowed me the chance to share with all of you.

Bebber is a very interesting in the Improv scene, a turntablist of sorts like the experimental likes of Marclay and Tétreault. Although I would say he is more in line with the latter than the former, but comparisons are comparisons. Surprisingly jazzy in the trifle and noisy, too! Originally encased in a wooden tomb for collectors of limited editions. I guess that is why it costs up to 100 euros to even hear it. Until today!

Looking back on this a bit, I've become very interested in hearing the rest of this boutique's catalog. Some names I never heard of with some delectable style tags.

Drone - The Fat Controller

I've said my piece or three [both in public and in private] about this excellent compact disc by this particular New Zealander group, so much so that I'm reduced to generic description. But that doesn't quite fit this album, too many tiny little sublime moments that compare favorably (yes, I'll compare em again) to contemporaries the Dead C. I swear I know a little bit more about this scene post the Dunedin sonic phenomena but I can't quite place it with Dadamah's aura. Listening and deciding is always better than reading and putting it off, really.

Not to blaspheme the blasphemers, but in the face of the revolutionary MonSter sound system I have shirked the original intentions by doubling the tracks on each channel into one for every song. In its original form, the album has different tracks going on at the same time in the stereo space, perfect for equalizers... But I intend to give it a bit more accessibility if at all.

Warped cabaret tunes and postpunk industrialism in a collage of madness.

Iva Bittová & Pavel Fajt - Bittová & Fajt

Is there a more dynamic duo in the field of avantgarde reimaginings of cultural folklore? I think not. Truly some beautiful and soulful music, much less of an academic look into this particular world than some takes from their contemporaries; A homely offering.

That isn't to say that the vaguely generalized label I attributed to their so-called "contemporaries" (whom I probably couldn't name in the moment despite being sure of myself) is meant to diminish them in comparison. Tons of great music came from this arena of the avant music scene circa 80s.

You might recall the mesmerizing "Morning Song" from Fred Frith's encapsulating "Step Across The Border" verite film... It's in here!

Various - No Idea Festival

A thought popped in my head listening to this. Whether or not I can craft the right sequence of words to reflect this thought is anyone's guess. It goes like this, the best free improv/eai/etc. has a sound or timbre similar to that of the noises old rusty buildings or frameworks make.

Whether that was a fabrication can only be known to me, I never really consider releases like these to be especially memorable but that did stick in my head (not my craw) a bit. A compiling of various musical performances in Texas for the No Idea Festival in 2004, featuring my man Jack Wright and his various friends. One word I would use for Jack's brand of free jazz improvisation is vacuous, not in the sense that it is vapid or shallow but a timbral quality of his recordings. It just sounds empty, not in the sense of.... It sounds good, the saxophone is in its own little world in the space of the other noisemakers about around it. Stop and start.

The 1985 - Obscured By Pink Clouds

Before 1975, there was 1985.

Not having heard this in awhile and hard of total memory (wild year, that), I can only give vague past impressions. But I can also speak about the group itself, though I have little info on them despite being "from" the same place.

I suppose it is a rather alien document amongst the scuzzbucket-pigfukkit noize rockers, the standard abrasive punx interspersed with bizarre minimal-electro synth motifs (Recalling at least a tiny bit at points the brilliant Brainiac) make this a worthwhile get. But that's just me. The CD version added all that stuff after the fact for all I know.

The (rightful [if I cared about "sequencing"]) closer on the vinyl platter, "Shooting Blanks" is a noise rock masterpiece in every sense for all I care... Looking now, I made a mistake in the above blurb: what was tacked on was the nameless little snippets after the seminal ender. Although I still do like em fine, it does lessen the impact of hearing the cops raid the band's recording studio/garage.
