 The second half as promised in the last post, just in time for the prelude to Christmas sunlight. As I mentioned before, this auction was somewhat of a crapshoot, an unknown. It was well worth the few 10s of dollars spent for both of em, two winners. At least I'd like to think so, without the fog of buyer's remorse and bargaining. But really, there is some interesting stuff going on here.

 Music for art installations, like the last one somewhat, but that doesn't take away the listenable aspects of this. Stray samples, strange synthsounds, and autre alliterations abound. The grand mystery revealed itself in a surprise of familiarity: one of the fellows involved in this project is a musician I know (not personally) from a few tapes from the noise-arch archive, Gerard Leckey. Here, under the alias Gabrel [sic] Angel with his partners in croime Patrick Harrop (who did the cover art here as well as the SLOD tape) and Paz Paisley (who has been putting some stuff from this group n perpendicular, including stuff from then and now), it is not too dissimilar to how I remember his own music sounding: collage, minimalism, and electronic overall.

The last tape had this nice little advertisement too but I felt it more appropriate to include it in the finale to the 2 episode miniseries.

 Christmas is in the air, and there's nothing more enchanting than that. Well, except for unknown tapes I picked up on eBay. You never know what to find in these plastic mystery boxes. Here is the first of these media incognita... Like many things, what appears to be totally obscured at first is eventually shone a light with a little scrutiny.
Like so, after previously having no luck finding any info on this at all, I soon found a Youtube channel (of which I was already subscribed) that contained both info and various tracks from this mysterious collective and adjacent.

This particular tape contains longform and lesser longform minimal elektronik pieces, not quite techno and not quite Vice Versa, Suicide, etc. Ambient and prog structure of an art gallery soundtrack.

Selfs Without Shells - 5: The Number Of Communication

Astute minds might notice something about today's post, that is the fact that it has been posted before. Well, apparently. Kinda. What the monumental tape-attack (which I'm glad was not shuttered after a few weeks without downloadability on the blog) posted was the IRRE iteration of this particular series of tapes. What we have here is not a failure to communication, but simply a small series of misunderstanding. numero cinq.

What's different? The tracklisting differs a little bit, though it shares the Birds of a Feather (apparently a separate group? I dunno, I wasn't there) side to a tee. The schism here, ironically, is the one that also shares a title with the other issue, that is 5: The Number of Communication side. Now, I don't know the significance of the number 5 and what it has to do with communication and magick and whatever but it seems to me that it comprises of various collaborations (probably via mail and elsewhere) between members of the Selfs with such incandescent figures as the Sack himself(s) and Del(eted) and autre un-unforgotten luminaries of the underground seen.

I was not very confident in my ability to discern between different tracks on this one as I am usually, given the muffled aspects of it and my forgetful laziness. Seeing as the "Bofa Feather" side differs from mine on the Brains For Breakfast rip, only one of us can be wrong! Or both.

Electroscоpe - Where The Оscilloscope Meets The Magic Eye

From the rack, to the deck, to the jack, music blogging's happy lexicon. I've had this for about a year now (a lucky find at a somewhat local hXc-orientated wreckord shop) but hesitated to crack it open and leave it for all to see like I usually do. There's probably a reason for that hesitation, a reason I have either forgotten or repressed but it's all moot now.......

.........Grace it. Lo-fi organ ballads, of the dirge variety. Well, not that sad. Pretty warm, actually. Farfisa noodlings, disparate drum programming and the real thing, sometimes voice poke through the grey light. They run a unique ship here, not sure about a tight one, and it doesn't seem a ship: too abstract.

An unknown shriek across sound spectra. "Unknown" meaning I have no clue who was behind this. Although it it befitting that this tape be from an obscure source, given its cacophonic (hah) terror. If I were to dredge up a cliche used by every internet reviewer since the mediums emergence, almost eldritch.

But what do I know? I can't even read, let alone Love. Craft of another form in the field of noise and collage and industrial and the fusion herein. This cassette just never stops from the word go, only ceding when it chokes the medium to its limits.

Tuned Out - (The Epics) Apart From The Contamination

I admit, I bought this because it was one of the few tapes filed under Experimental on eBay that wasn't Zooropa or whatever. Another factor was that it's cheap, and that I have no idea what it is. Well, what it is is noizy hardcore punx. Of course, a large factor of the noise can be attributed to recording quality, but noise is noise. Experiment!

A bit of a hail mary, but I'm sure if all else is equal these guys were/are from Allentown. And at least one of them went on to play in the Atown Sluts. Do with that what you will. To digress, I was originally thinking I'd either put this on my varied detritus blog or send a little birdie mail to Terminal Escape since this seems more their bag... Yet here we are.

Olliwor - To Many Heroes

Die Welttraumforscher, and at times antecedent to the utterly unique Svede mrperfect.

Another treat from the welt of Loon:

a previous mystery to me in the Moniflabel catalog, I had only so much information provided to me about the who's and what's of this project; Olliwor Fried is the token.

On this tape, the singularly named Olliwor

plays the browns as it were, a focus on

lowfi pop and the odd interlude

of dreamtime.

My comparisons above were rather immediate connections.

     Very Tall Dwarfs, in an affected English that is. The best parts of this exercise is the bent melodies mixed with

       the discordant synths and fuzzed out geetars. It is rather different from the usual Forscher affair but also very much hereditary, especially based on what I have heard from the early days of the label.

Schwarzwurz / Harald "Sack" Ziegler - Zugabäh! / Helau?

Back to our regularly scheduled programme, as abnormally placated it is. I got this tape from the honcho of the immortal Ebus tape conglomerate on Discogs recently, and it certainly is a strange beast. The A-side is composed of live performances from a band/duo/project/experiment called Schwarzwurz. Prior to this I had no exposure to them and on first glance, they are pretty damn wild. Noise-industrial improv, "Fuck You" kind of music.

Now the B-side is from a figure that I have a much greater familiarity with. Harald "Sack" Ziegler has been putting out warped pop for years, and with a live backing it becomes even rougher.

Just the two sides ripped, pristine and without any bells and whistles in the post-processing and splitting processes. Since the tracks are quite hard to discern from one another due to the quality and nature of live performance and my ignorance of most of the content, I hope it's acceptable.

Another 90s gem from the man with the plan... This kind of tape would probably be better suited for the more "indie" nostalgie blogs, conforming to more of the poppier/footwear glancing side of noize as opposed to the harsher/collage-based/industrial explored here. Though I do have a propensity for synthy stuff, so I guess it's a wash.

Not much info on this group, and I would have probably found more if not for some kind of bad loop on the internet archive. It's a shame, really. Something about Television, and I'm not talking about the consumer electronic though you hear a good amount of those on this cassette. Marquis de Moon Television, must have been a collaboration. Anyway, this is a UK Noise Pop and Post-Punk project by and by, composed of Ric and Marianne, whoever they may well be.

Blender Blender 2x4 - The Clownward Spiral

Never to be expected, a smattering of DIY ethics coming your way!

Now, Blender Blender 2x4 (or BB2x4, or BB2X4, etc.) is was/not/was a project by Poughkeepsie native K.D. Schmitz. It is a project I've heard about for quite awhile and I finally got my hands on a rip through the kind hands of Tony Coulter, who on every fortweek hosts the great show called "Tape Hiss" on WFMU. Basically, he plays obscure tapestries from various eras and of sometimes dubious origin all the way through. As consequence, the shows are not archived unfortunately to those who can't always make the grade at midday to listen in. But, Tony was gracious enough to send this particular rip over. Gotta luvvvvv it.

The tape consists of what I always assumed this particular mutations sound would pertain to: collages and intermittent noize, sometimes combined. A little uva twist here, some radioplay and the spoken word has entered the pregnable soundform. Gives it a little spice, I'd say. Something to do with clowns.

Hachiman Mae - 八幡前その弐 (Hachiman Mae 2)

Here we are again, the start of the end. The start of the end of Hachiman-Mae's extant tapography (at least to my knowledge). Their sound hasn't changed much from the last tape: noisy folk mannerisms in a lofi environment, short and harshly sweet in its brevitous use of a 60 minute cassettes A side. 

As one can surmise from the imagery brought forth by me, the packaging is much more ambitious compared to the last soiree. More colourful, decorated, and a bitch to scan. A fold out enclosure held together by a golden string holds within another enclosure whose space is occupied by the emerging soundform contained within yet another enclosure, this being the cartridge.

I got this rarity off Discogs dot com from the man behind NAPALMED, a Czech noise projection which collaborated with these guys through split releases, comp appearances back in those near old times. He tells me that he hasn't spoken with members of the group for quite awhile, and that Hosomi didn't have email. Well, there goes my plan of any sort of reissue/retrospective that would shake the modern world to its post-ironic core.

Brume - Recycled

French musician Brume has a very wide and expansive discography, mostly falling under the genres of drone, noise, and ambient (frequently overlapping). This recycled tape is no exception. The cassette that was used seems to be an Techno/House/Trance (?) compilation and some parts of it seep through the overdub. I kept these parts for authenticity purposes and for the fact I'm not entirely sure their actually by Brume himself or not.

Various Artists - Put Down Your Pencil

Lotso familiar names on this tape. A sound art comp featuring the likes of the BCO, Larry Wendt, Croiners, Al Margolis, and Illusion of Safety. A lot to like here, from the industrial rumblings of Big Red Stain to the silly Plunderphonia of the Tape-Beatles and Ed Special. Wendt's track here in particular is very interesting, an arresting spoken piece describing the lucrative venture of toad farming in San Jose (if anyone has any of his old tapes from Frog Peak/Hollow, let me know). All in all, an interesting experimental collection.
